An Adventure to Remember: Looking Back at Our South African Student Expedition 2026!
What a journey it was! Over Spring Break, a group of incredibly lucky students embarked on an epic, globe-trotting journey to South Africa. We successfully blended historical and cultural experiences, unbelievable wildlife encounters, and breathtaking landscapes into one unforgettable school expedition!
The adventure began even before we touched down in Africa! During a layover in Munich, students explored the historic Altstadt (Old Town). We took in iconic sights like the stunning Marienplatz, the famous Frauenkirche, and the legendary Hofbräuhaus, before fueling up for the flight ahead with traditional pretzels and bratwurst.
Once we arrived in the spectacular “Mother City,” our itinerary was absolutely packed with coastal wonders.
Boulders Beach: We got up close and personal with the adorable and famous African Penguin Colony, and discovered the very cute dassie.
Cape Point: We stood at the dramatic, sweeping cliffs at the edge of the continent, taking in the ocean breeze.
Table Mountain: Our thrill-seekers tackled a challenging hike up the Platteklip Gorge route in the rain.
Robben Island: We took a sobering, powerful, and deeply educational trip to learn about South Africa’s complex history and the legacy of Nelson Mandela.
We travelled the Garden Route to Mossel Bay and Oudtshoorn. Here, the group experienced:
Point of Human Origins: We took a profound and fascinating tour of the Point of Human Origins at Pinnacle Point. Exploring these world-renowned archaeological caves, students stepped back in time to learn about the dawn of modern human behaviour.
Meerkat Adventures: We had an incredible early morning wilderness encounter, watching these curious creatures emerge from their burrows to greet the sun.
Cango Caves: A guided descent took us through magnificent, ancient limestone chambers.
Ostrich Farm Tour: We learned about the heritage of these giant, quirky birds.
Authentic Braai: We enjoyed a mouth-watering, traditional South African barbeque at the renowned Kobus se Gat.
From a vintage PowerVan excursion winding through the lush Outeniqua Mountains to exploring the Transport Museum in George, students saw a totally different side of the famous Garden Route.
The true heart of our academic journey took place during a week-long expedition with Opwall at Gondwana. Here, students rolled up their sleeves and immersed themselves directly in active conservation efforts and real-world wildlife research. They went off the beaten track to conduct game transects, switch out camera traps, count and identify birds, collect data on the vegetation, obtain samples, and walk with the wildlife. It was hands-on learning at its absolute best!
We returned to Cape Town to spend our final night sleeping under the African stars in beautiful cabins. The expedition concluded with a peaceful stay at !Khwa ttu, a San Heritage Centre. Students participated in an immersive San Guided Experience, learning about the ancient culture, survival skills, and history of the indigenous San people.
This expedition was an amazing, memorable adventure, where we saw the incredible soul of South Africa. We are so grateful to have shared in this experience together.
